Hubby and I watched it last night.  That Timmy Treadway was a fruitcake!  The movie was OK, but I was disappointed that we didn't get to hear the tape of Tim and his girlfriend, Amy's attack.  My husband says that I am morbid, but I like to think I am just really interested in crime and murder, and a little interested in the death part.  I really felt sorry for Amy.  The things some women do for love.  She was afraid of bears, yet she loved Timmy enough to accompany him on his bear watching expedition, and she died because of it.  Sad.

I Loves those aircrash shows.:stickouttounge:

Dyna, You know, I bet you would just love Jon Krakauers Book "Into Thin Air". Death and Survival in the "zone of death" above 25000 feet on Mount Everest. I think that book'd be just your scene.

"Into Thin Air"-Wasn't that on the best sellers list for a while?  I should read it.  I'll read pretty much anything.

"Grizzly Man" was interesting.  Tom was crazy.  He is literally a few feet from these wild bears.  Some of the scenes are shocking, and yes, the scenery is beautiful. I am hankerin' to go to Alaska now.  I really felt sorry for him.  He must have been a little depressed or crazy or whatever to want to go somewhere where he would be so alone.  And the way he tries to humanize the bears is a little heart-renching.  You have to remember, bears and foxes were his only companions for several months at a time.

i really liked grizzly man too!  the poor girlfriend.  i was okay without hearing the attack...that would have been too gruesome for me to actually hear them being killed.

i also recommend "into thin air"  great book!  last week on discovery, they aired a special about that day in 1996 on mt everest.  krakauer was interviewed and most (all ??) of the people he writes about in the book are on the show.   here's the show info: Mt Everest: Death Mountain

Krakauers written 3 books that i know of. "Thin Air" "Under the banner of heaven" and "Into the Wild'.

Into the wild is about some young guy, Chris McCandless, (true story) goes into Alaska to live off the land and ends up starving to death out there.

Banner of Heaven is a thorough examination of Mormon church splinter groups. The Mormon church abandoned, years ago, numerous doctrines of the Founder, such as Polygamy and blood vengeance / City of Refuge practises. Well the splinter groups practise those things and are some of the most dangerous fundamentalist groups in America. The Singer clan and the Ervil LeBaron group were Mormon splinter groups.

Not to hijack my own thread, but didn't he just write a book on the Boston Strangler?  Wasn't the BS his mom's handy man or something?

I finally saw "Grizzly Man" today. Very interesting, although he was a fruitcake dealing with his own demons.

After they screened the show, it had a follow-up short doco that had his friends (most who were in "Grizzly Man") discussing the film. They said the film missed several aspects of Tim's life, such as his amazing still photography. Also his g/f had grown up with bears all her life, so she knew what she was getting into. She was 37 when she died, so it wasn't like she was some innocent city girl lured into the wilderness.

Werner Herzog is a great director, although in this instance the movie was more about editing and commentary on what Timothy had filmed himself.

I too admit that I was morbidly curious, but I think Herzog chose the most respectful option in not allowing the sounds of Tim and Amy's deaths to be played, it would have been distasteful and cheapened the whole movie. And of course as a every great director knows sometimes what you leave out is as powerful as what you put in.

Rf & I watched it today as well........I must admit to empathising with Tim's desire to be one with the bears.......

If I was in touching distance of a Tiger, Polar Bear, or any of the large bears....I know I would not be able to resist patting them..........their magnetism is overwhelming...

I agree with Incognita.........I think it added more to the story not having "the soundtrack".......just watching  the reactions when Werner  was listening, I found incredibly poignant.......
